Ecuador is a country located in South America on the border of the equator and that is how it has got its name. The capital city is called Quito and the largest city in the country is known as Guayaquil. This city was the first to gain its independence from Spain in the year 1820, 9th August. Spanish is the main language of this country. The surrounding countries are Peru, Brazil, Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. Due to its location near to the equator, it hardly experiences any changes to the daylight hours. Because its nearness to the Pacific Ocean, it has a tropical climate with heavy rainy season.

Ecuador is among the seven mega-diverse countries in the world. Here you can find almost 1,600 species of birds in the continental area and about 38 species in the Galapagos. Here you can also find 25,000 species of plants, 106 endemic reptiles, 138 endemic amphibians, and 6,000 species of butterflies.
